Historical Background

Until the 1970’s, advances in medical care in the Philippines were centred mainly on a few major urban areas. The majority of the rural communities were left either with no or inadequate manpower resources and facilities. Recognizing the severity of the problem, Dr. Jose G. Tamayo founded the Perpetual Help Education & Health Care Institutions which became one of the forerunners in the decentralization of the Philippine Medical Education and Health Care delivery systems.

The beginning of the Perpetual Help System was in 1952 when the Perpetual Help Clinic was established in Sampaloc, Manila. Fourteen years later in 1966, the Perpetual Help Hospital located at the corner of V. Concepcion and Laong-Laan Streets in Manila, opened its doors to provide health care to a larger segment of the community. The founders envisioned the hospital concept to provide, not only the health care needs but also adequate training of those who would administer such health care. Thus in 1986, the Perpetual Help School of Nursing was established at the same site in Manila.

The "Satellite Program" soon emerged to spread the "hospital and school" concept to serve other communities. Perpetual Help "satellites" were organized in the 1970’s starting way up north in Malasique, Pangasinan, where the Perpetual Help Malasique Community Hospital was established.

This was followed by the launching of the second satellite in 1975 at Pamplona, Las Piñas, Rizal, where the Perpetual Help College of Rizal and the Perpetual Help Medical Center now proudly stand out as leaders in the health care and education fields. This was followed closely by the opening in 1976 of the Perpetual Help School of Laguna. In 1977, the Perpetual Help College of Medicine opened in Biñan, Laguna.
