The College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Perpetual Help System Laguna in joint venture with UPHS-GMA, UPHS-Isabela and Perpetual Help College of Manila conducted an enrichment webinar entitled: “Intensifying the Written and Oral Communication Skills of Students.” It was held last February 17, 2021 via Zoom meeting which is part of the academic thrust and tri-focal functions of UPHS-JONELTA to continuously contribute to the educative demands of the students. The enrichment webinar aims at developing the written and oral communication skills of the students which can be of great help in various aspects of their life, from their professional careers, to social gatherings, to their family life considering that in today’s hectic world, people rely heavily on sharing information, resulting in greater emphasis being placed on having good communication skills. Likewise, the webinar focuses on helping the students enhance their verbal and written communication skills which are essential in order to deliver and understand information quickly and accurately. Ms. Reenalyn M.Manguilin from Dyson Philippines Ltd. was the resource speaker of the enrichment seminar who vividly shared her valuable views about the worth of having a well-developed spoken and non-verbal communication skills needed both in the academic sphere and in the corporate world. Ms. Manguilin who holds a baccalaureate degree in Development Communication and has a master’s degree in People Management eloquently presented in the enrichment webinar the 5 Unspoken Rules of Written and Oral Communication namely: appreciation, empathy, listening and involving others, transparency and networking/asking for help. The topics presented by the resource speaker focused on the significance of making people know that they are valued and respected, the precise way of describing facts and feelings which can be positive and negative, to listen not to respond but to understand the needs of other people, to build trust and share ideas, thoughts and reasons behind decisions or changes and to identify what help people need to maintain relationship which are part and parcel of improving the students’ ability to be part of any healthy communication. Present in the enrichment seminar were Dr. Ferdinand C. Somido, Executive School Director of UPHS-JONELTA, Dr.Susana C.Bautista, School Director of UPHS-GMA campus, Dr. Jing Pangilinan, School Director of PHC-Manila , deans and faculty of the 4 UPHS-JONELTA campuses. Indeed, the enrichment webinar was so interactive considering the comprehensive queries raised by the students during the open forum which were then intelligently answered by the resource speaker. In conclusion, the joint effort exerted by the 4 UPHS-JONELTA campuses in the conduct of the above-mentioned enrichment webinar was really worth the preparation.
